Sgt. Jones
Zykeria, 5 years old may remember her dad, but
surely Alexia, 2 years old will not. His wife Yashica is young and she will be
able to start a new life again, with time. So, please take a moment and remember
Sergeant Karl Jones. He is a hero and should not be forgotten quickly. On a cold
and snowy day this past January, he was killed along the Glenn Highway. He was a
week or so from deploying to Afghanistan with his U. S. Army unit. SGT Jones, 23
years old, stopped to help a stranded vehicle. The vehicle was driven by a
person SGT Jones didn’t even know. That did not stop him from pulling over and
getting out of his vehicle to lend a helping hand. As SGT Jones and others were
helping to get the stalled vehicle going, another oncoming car tried to slow
down, but lost control. As the vehicle plunged toward the would-be rescuers, SGT
Jones jumped into action. He yelled for everyone to watch out and pushed folks
out of the way. SGT Jones was struck and killed. His wife and children are back
home with their family now. SGT Jones has been buried in his home state of
Georgia.
We, the members of the Viet Nam Vets Motorcycle Club never met SGT Jones. But,
some how we felt his story needed to be retold. His sacrifice, and the
sacrifices of the many young men and women serving our country should never be
forgotten.
We look forward to seeing you guys on the road soon. Our POW Run is just around the corner, in April. The Alaska chapter of the American Ex-POWs puts on this ceremony at a different school each year. If you are interested in riding with us, give us a call at 227-3155 or visit us at our web site www.vnvmc-ak.com.
